Apparently God’s Angry

….But not, I think, as angry as me.

Unless you have been honeymooning on Mars there is a good chance you know at least the basics of what is happening in Japan. About the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that struck the country, about the tsunami that followed, about the still lingering threat of nuclear fall out due to damage in the reactors of three of the countries biggest power stations…

Perhaps you don’t know that it’s all happened because they’re such a godless bunch.

Or at leasts that’s what Glenn Beck and a variety of people on YouTube have been claiming.

Earlier today I witnessed an american girl rhapsodizing about the power of God, because she had been praying for God to strike down the athiests since the beginning of lent and look! Apparently he had done so.

“God is just so good.” She kept repeating over and over again.

And if that wasn’t sickening enough, now Glenn Beck, Fox News special correspondent and internationally renowned repulsive pain in the arse has joined the fray. The following is from Nydailynews.com

Beck continued trying to make a connection between human behavior and the natural disasters that have wreaked havoc in Japan, even casually mentioning “radical Islam” before revealing what he called “the answer.”

“The answer is, buckle up!” he said. “Because it’s going to be a bumpy ride.”

This is a sign of politics and rhetoric and humanity just gone so so far from right that they’re almost approaching it from the other side.

Untold thousands of people are dead, and because they don’t look like you, or talk like you, or live near you, their deaths were deserved. Because you didn’t know them, because you didn’t lose someone you loved, the pain that these people are going through, the deaths, the suffering, that can be used to make cheap, empty calls to arms and calls to worship your God.

How on earth can Glenn Beck, or any other person who claims this is God’s work, ever, ever claim to have any love for anything in their hearts? Because while I may not be religious, I’m fairly certain that Jesus had a few things to say about just generally being nice to each other. And I’m also fairly certain that God mentioned something about all men being created in his image.

But what I’m most certain of is that this, right here, these comments, this unthinking ignorance and cruelty, this is the reason for the problems in our world. Because everything that is wrong, everything cruel, every horror that humans can visit on each other boils down to looking at someone else and deciding that they are less then you.

Because their hair, sex, sexuality, colouring, eye colour, religion, marital status… whatever it is, something about them is different from you. And that makes them somehow not human. That makes their lives, thier hopes, their dreams, their souls worth less then yours.

But guess what? We’re all the same. We are all humans. We all bleed, we all cry, we are all born, we all live and we all die. And we all try to cram as much in as possible before the latter. And each of our lives is just as valuable, just a precious, just as unique and complex and strange and confusings as yours and mine.

You reading this, are like me. You may think differently, look differently, act differently, but you are equal to me, and your life is just as valuable.

And people like Glenn Beck have failed to grasp that concept, because of ignorance and megalomania.

God did not do this. But it scares me that people like Glenn Beck wanted him too.
